STAKEHOLDERS’ WORKSHOP ON DEVELOPMENT OF A FRAMEWORK FOR COORDINATION AND PRODUCTION OF LABOUR MIGRATION STATISTICS/INFORMATION (LMI) IN KENYA
The State Department for Labour and Skills Development held a workshop on implementing Component 3 - Improving Labour Market Information (LMI) of the Kenya Youth Employment and Opportunities (KYEOP).
The component of the project is designed to respond to the problem of non-availability of timely information about Labour supply and demand that would address the major problem of frictional unemployment in Kenya.
The framework is crucial to foster inter-agency collaboration and stakeholder engagement as a coordinated approach to labour migration data management, ensuring consistency and comparability over time and for use of existing administrative data on labour migration statistics.
This framework will also identify key stakeholders in labour migration data, outline quality data management practices, establish policies and legal frameworks governing labour migration data, define labour migration indicators, and set up a monitoring and evaluation mechanism.
Under Executive Order No. 1 of 2023, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has been tasked with developing methodologies, maintaining databases on employment creation, coordinating labour migration management, establishing a legal and institutional framework for labour migration, and promoting cooperation and partnerships on labour migration.
The Labour Migration Statistics Framework for Kenya will provide a mechanism for the coordination and production of labour migration statistics in Kenya. The framework will be heavily guided by the Statistics Act of 2006 and the Metadata Handbook for Kenya.
